Can You Tell Me Your Job Search Goal 9 Out of 10 Job Seekers Cant!

Can You Tell Me Your Job Search Goal 9 Out of 10 Job Seekers Can’t! Pamela Gordon sent her résumé to 9 different job postings and got no results. Some of the jobs were for administrative assistant, one was as a marketing coordinator, and another was for a project manager. In a few of the applications, she attached a standard cover letter, which restated her experiences from her résumé. As she got more and more anxious â€" and desperate â€" Pamela resorted to RAA: Random Acts of Application. What’s wrong with this picture? Solution: Before applying to any job, develop a clear â€" and written â€" job search goal. You will be amazed at how valuable this step is to: …write an effective application and cover letter. …find the right jobs to apply to for greater odds of success. …answer the interview question, “What are you looking for?” …interview with passion and commitment. …win a job! How to narrow down your Job Goal. 1. Do research about occupations, vocations, job functions, job titles, job responsibilities, etc. Visit the US Bureau of Labor Statistics for descriptions and information about hundreds of occupations: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/ https://www.bls.gov/audience/jobseekers.htm Go to job search websites such as Indeed.com, Monster.com, etc. (You can find more here.) Don’t apply to anything! Just shop. Don’t even worry about the city right now. Find 10 positions or job descriptions that you see yourself not only qualified for, but something that gets you excited. Spend hours reading the entire descriptions, including the skills they are looking for, the tasks you would be doing, and what other requirements they need. Print out those 10 positions or job descriptions. Are they all positions that help others (customer service), or that sell something, or that require a lot of analysis? Are they all in big corporations or small start-ups? Circle common keywords. Identify the functions, occupations, or vocations where you can see yourself spending your workday. You will be applying to join a team, even if you are working alone. Where do other people work who are doing what you want to do? If you are searching within your own company, find jobs on their career site and, ultimately, be able to narrow down to specific positions in specific divisions. When internal job seekers came to me for coaching within my own company and said they weren’t sure what they want to do next, I advised them to go and talk to other people about what they did. Ultimately, they should be able to identify positions and name individuals, such as, “I want a job like Mark Smith has.” 2. Read as many books on career selection as you can. Buy, beg, or borrow them! The web has a variety of resources as well. Joe, who didn’t know what he wanted to do next, told me, “It was a copy of What Color Is Your Parachute?by Richard Bolles that saved me. I poured through it and the workbook, completing all the exercises, and it worked.” My new book, Cut the Crap, Get a Job! A New Job Search Process for a New Era, teaches my revolutionary, step-by-step job search process. When you buy the book for less than $20, you also get the downloadable tools you need to launch your personal search (valued at over $49)! Whatever it takes, you need to be able to articulate a clear, concise and specific job search goal. Not just so you are grounded, but to share with your network and hiring managers. Need some advice? Got a specific challenge? Let me give you a hand; I’m ready to help! Dana

The employing is quick paced and meetings happen as often as possible. Given the bustling action, it is consistently a smart thought to catch up after a meeting and let them realize you are still available. These three months are additionally acceptable on the grounds that it is when workers choose to change employments. For them, it would look bad to leave in December and miss that finish of-year reward! Keep your eyes open extra-wide during this time in light of the fact that there is heaps of activity!#2 Best Time of Year - September and OctoberThese two months are extraordinary for applying, nearly for indistinguishable reasons from January and February. There are general floods of recruiting that happens and it for the most part gets after individuals come back from vacation. There are likewise more meetings and less holding up in light of the fact that the employing must be done quicker. Resume Writers Digest Guest Blog Post E-mail Newsletters Still Relevant

Resume Writers' Digest Guest Blog Post E-mail Newsletters Still Relevant As social media and blogging have grown more and more popular, theres been some talk about the demise of the lowly email newsletter, or e-zine. Once a staple of business owners using the Internet to market and promote their businesses, it seems that lately the thinking is that theyre not so important anymore. Or, even worse, not as effective. If youre not familiar, an e-zine can be as simple as a plain text email with a couple of helpful tips for your readersto a HTML version with pictures, an article, listings of your upcoming events and more. While its true that there is more stuff clamoring for our attention in our inboxes than ever beforeand blogs and social media seem to be the more of-the-moment methods to reach out to potential customersI still believe that an e-zine is a key marketing tool. In fact, its the perfect vehicle for continuing the relationship youve begun with people on social media sites or your blog. Here are a few reasons why: 1) Keeps you top of mind As muc h as we would like to think that our prospects or our audience are always thinking of us (wouldnt THAT be nice?), its unfortunately not the case. Just as a company wouldnt run a TV commercial just once, repetition is necessary to remind people of you, your offerings and your expertise. 2) Intimacy No, not that kind. An e-zine gives you a great opportunity to create a feeling of intimacy between yourself and your readers by sharing a bit about what is going on with you outside of your business. (Think about what youve been up to latelygot anything to share about your recent vacation, your pets, a great book youve just finished?) Often people do this in a section at the beginning of their e-zine under a heading such as A Note From or something similar. This helps strengthen the relationship with your subscribers by giving them a glimpse into who you are. 3) Expert status The more consistently you share information, tips and articles on the subject or niche you are most know ledgeable in, the more credibility you gain in the eyes of your readers. Perceived expertise leads to trust which leads to sales.A few other tips for your e-zine: Frequency: How often you send it depends on how often you can commit to doing so, (hows that for an answer ? ) but I recommend at a minimum twice a month and ideally, once a week. Remember, you want to stay top of mind above all else. Subject line: Another important part of your e-zine is your subject line. Obviously you want as many people to open your e-zine as possible, so have some fun with this. Think of what would stir up curiosity in your readerand dont be afraid to be a little provocative or a teensy bit controversial once in a while. When to send: A common question is what day is best to send it out? There is no set answer to this, except to say that I have heard several different opinions on the matter. Tuesday through Thursday is often said to be the best timehowever, I know others who send theirs o ut on Sunday and have a very good open rate as well. You may want to play around and test a couple of different days and see what your results are. No matter what day you choose, know that an open rate of 25% and above is considered good. Your email marketing service will be able to supply those stats. If youve been hesitant about putting together your e-zine because you think you dont have enough content or you dont have a fancy-looking template, remember, simple is fine. Start with one tip. The sooner you make the commitment to communicate with your list on a regular basis, the sooner you can reap the benefits of that strengthened relationship. No more excuses, ok?
